Sorry for the late response -- I've been out of town!

I played Mendelssohn 5 this past July. The second clarinet player had a
trill pencilled in on his part; I did not. We tried it both ways, and I
thought it was better without. It preserves the line, and you don't have
to worry about timing w/ the second.

I don't know why this is an issue, but obviously has been done both ways.
