Hi Mark - I had written what follows prior to reading Avrahm Galper's note
suggesting Gade as the composer. Since my note hadn't yet been sent, I
thought I would send it just to you, instead of the whole list, since it
contains some additional information.
Also, in your last note to me you asked if I had started my cataloging. The
short answer is "no", since I *must* get a new computer first. My daughter
(who is an engineer bilingual in MAC and PC) has strongly suggested I switch
from MAC to PC and I've essentially decided to do that. I'm in the
research/price comparison phase now trying to figure out what I need/want. I
still have the note you sent a long time ago suggesting what would be
adequate. I haven't read it recently, as I want to assess this myself first,
and then use your comments as the "Devil's Advocate" position!
Mark Charette writes as follows (in part):
>One of sneezy's Bulletin Board members has inquired about a piece
>by (they think) Neils Gardner called 4 Fantasies for Clarinet,
>Op. 40. They also think the composer was a contemporary of Mendelssohn.
>My "normal" places (the UofCal libraries, NY Public Research Libraries)
>have turned up absolutely nothing. I tried alternate spellings of the
>name as well.
>Any ideas?
This could be the work in question, but it's not a sore thing:
"Fantasiestucke", Op. 43, by Niels Gade, for clarinet (or violin) and piano,
consisting of four sections:
Andantino con moto
Allegro vivace
Ballade - Moderato
Allegro molto vivace
Gade lived from 1817 to 1890, vs. Mendelssohn who lived from 1809 to 1847.
I have no idea if this is still in print, but I have a copy published by Fr.
Kistner of Leipzig. It is undated.
Regards,
Don
