If you could tell us what pieces you are capable of playing and sight
reading, this would give an insight on your current playing ability.
Are there specific pieces you find difficult? What method books do you
use for your study of clarinet outside the band method book? What band
method books does your school system use? This information will assist
list members in making recommendations.

Also it has been a very great pleasure to read your comments and those
of Craig on schools, teaching, etc. It is quite obvious that you both
are motivated to think and learn and add experience to this wonderful
start. Keep up the good work.

As you grow and develop, investigate new things but also remain aware of
the value of the old. No one has yet developed a system to teach
reading that provides as good and consistent result (and this latter is
important) as phonics. There are many adults in this country who went
to schools that used the "new method" (any of several actually) who now
must take remedial phonics to bring their reading skills up to par. If
you have studied any foreign language, notice that you are taught that
language phonetically.

I will close with a quote that I think really describes the wonderful
exchanges on this list. Unfortunately I cannot remember the author.

There is none so old they cannot learn and none so young they cannot
teach.
