Absolutely not! I play the tuba as well, and it is not impossible for
everyone. It's merely a different approach to embouchure. It takes
some adjustment, but you can certainly master it if you wish.

AmyLynnR@-----.com also says:
"I don't think a music teacher should have to play well on so many
different instruments. You have to be strong in woodwinds or brass."

And that's usually the case. However, there are also many band
directors, at least by us, who are strong on many instruments. All the
better! You really need someone who was a strong background on all the
instruments before they can really teach those instruments. For a
professor of clarinet this may not be as much of a concern, but if you
have to teach every instrument in the band to beginners you need to have
a THOROUGH knowledge of how to create good tone, have good technique,
etc. It would be unreasonable to know expect someone to be a virtuoso
on every instrument, but I know I would feel a lot more comfortable
teaching with great confidence in my own playing ability.
