The 4.5 discussion reminds me of junior high and high school when the
clarinet players used to ask each other what strength reed they used; as if
that was somehow a contest. When I tried to explain to the section that
what strength reed used depended a lot on a person's set-up and not on how
advanced the player was (although that's a factor too), they thought I was
just saying that because I (second chair) played on a 3.5 and the first
chair player played on a 4.
