This is so far off the mark (even for the closest, longest facings the
students are likely to find in a music store), that maybe offending them
slightly is less of an issue than getting them to correct the practice.
Although the strength is somewhat brand-dependent, it is almost certainly
too heavy in any brand for MOST of the students' mouthpieces. Even for
those using Gigliotti P mouthpieces or some other similarly long and close
curve, most 4.5 reeds of any brand I've played on will need adjusting and
balancing that most of the kids in a high school band without private
teachers will be unable to do. And if they ARE taking private lessons, it's
the private teacher's place to recommend reeds and other equipment, so any
"INSIST"ing by the band directors is doubly out of line with these kids.
However, if you haven't already done it, you might first ask them what they
really say to the kids. Sometimes things get distorted in the telling by
the time they get home.
