Maybe she is relaxing the wrong muscles when you're not looking, so that
her mouth feels more comfortable. If she's *starting* with a no. 3 reed,
that seems quite likely. One can quite clearly see newish players doing
this sometimes - I probably did it myself.
(She may also have a bad ear, of course...).
