Subj: Mysterious A clarinet....

I'm wondering if anyone on the list could give me any information about
an A clarinet I bought about a year and a half ago from someone in
Virginia that I met on the Internet. Its serial number is T3 (the
serial number is engraved under the trill keys). The trademark symbol
is an oval (similar to the Buffet mark, but not as fancy), with the
words "J. Gras" along the top half (inside) and "Lille" (which I assume
is the place of manufacture) along the inside bottom of the oval. In
the center of the oval are the words "Brevete S.C.D.G.". It's made of
wood, is quite free-blowing, has a lovely tone and plays in tune
throughout the range.

I'd be interested in any information about its history or value. I
don't intend to sell it, so this is just to satisfy my own curiosity.
The fellow I bought it from found it (along with a non-matching generic
Bb clarinet) at a church flea market in Virginia. It arrived in
terrible condition, and needed extensive cleaning, some cracks repaired,
new pads and overall adjustment. Fortunately, I have a friend who does
this for me free. He said he thought it had sat in the case for a very
long time.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Donna
