I recall in college preparing for a performance of some piece I
can't rememeber now but which featured the piamo and I played first
clarinet among four or five. The clarinets backed up the pianist using
rather long throat tones. A lot of time went into just getting the
clarinets in tune. I think the piece was something by Brahms that had
been arranged for band.
One helpful tip I learned from this is to be aware of the speed
of the airstream. It may take some practice! However, gaining control
of the airstream is no small feat. The throat tones will always sound
different. The point is to blend them with the two registers.
