When I studied briefly with Bernie Portnoy at Indiana University, he
advocated using the normal fingering, A key + register key, and adding
l.h. 3, r.h. 1,2 & 3, and the low E key with either little finger. It
creates a little more resistance to blow against, and works nicely on all
the clarinets I have played. But obviously you can't employ this
fingering in fast technical passages.
