Sorry, I spelled Revelli's name wrong.

I just don't believe in paying to take abuse. It is different if you are
being paid. Sort of like the difference between West Point and the Citadel
or VMI.

I am sure that the people who played for him thought they got something out
of it and were certainly prepared for the world of professional conductors.
Everyone has to make choices.

I played for Harry Begian at the U. of Illinois in the mid-70's. Begian was
mentioned in an earlier post. I think of him as a contemporary of
Revelli's. Certainly rehearsals were tense, but the music making was
glorious. The one year I spent in the first clarinet section, right under
nose, was particularly stressful as he heard the slightest intonation or
attack variation. But I learned greatly from this, especially playing in
tune, matching pitches, careful counting and articulation. My kids play in
the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras, and the conductors are quite
commanding, not as intense as Revelli and Begian.........I think it's great
for our kids and students to get exposure to something like this, as long as
it's not abusive.
