These days, if you want to play jazz it's about the only thing to do. And
much easier than for saxists to become clarinettists.

I also picked up saxophone late -- long after college. I now play lead
alto (doubling clarinet, of course) in a big band and will be playing an
alto solo in two weeks with my local community band (last season I played
bass clarinet). Now that I think of it, three of the five of our big band
saxes started on clarinet.

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
