What actually classes a clarinet as an "intermediate" instrument? I
recently bought a Noblet clarinet, which was called an intermediate
instrument on this list. The serial number predates Leblanc's records, as a
guess it's about 40 to 50 years old. The clarinet is not black but dark
brown and the wood structure is clearly visile (with a magnifying glass).
The instrument has a beautiful sound over all its range, especially so in
the low range (I had it played for me by a somewhat better player than
myself, he thinks it's the best sounding clarinet he ever played), and, as
far as my tuner can distinguish, it's in tune all over the range (which is
supposed to be impossible if I believe the tales being told here).

Can anybody tell me anything about these old clarinets? Why are they
classified as intermediate as opposed to a professional clarinet?

Thanks

Detlef
