Lucky Ted

One year the Toronto Symphony was scheduled to travel to Bay City Ohio,
to play a concert.
We all met in the morning at Union station (like the Central station)
and left at the appointed time.
The train stopped at a station called West Side station and there our
second oboist, Ted, was to get on the train.
We got to that station. NO TED!
Of course, the train continued without him.
"Poor Ted", we thought," he'll have to stay home"
We got to Detroit, got off the train and boarded waiting buses to go to
Bay City.
It was snowing. Soon the snow got very heavy, and got stormy.
We had to stop in a small town I don't remember which.
We stayed there many hours, until 4 A.M.
Lucky Ted to miss all this.
We spent the time going into a small restaurant MANY times, getting
coffee, apple pie a la mode, chocolate bars (all poison).

At 4 A.M. we got moving, got to Bay City, dead tired. Got into the hotel
to catch some sleep.
Was Ted ever lucky to miss all this!
In the afternoon there was another bus that took us to the hall.

Entering the hall, we hear oboe sounds drifting about.
It was TED!
"HOW DID YOU GET HERE?"
He took a taxi from Toronto to Detroit and then hitchhiked to Bay City.
The taxi cost him $90.

We took up a collection to reimburse his taxi cost.
The least we could for lucky Ted.
