There has been quite a bit of discussion of jazz clarinet here, and you
should definitely go through the archives. Specifically there have been
some comments about Stoltzman both as a jazz player and as a performer of
the classical repertoire. While Eddie Daniels is my pick for the best
contemporary jazz clarinetist, there are many really fine players. I
think of Don Byron right away, of Kenny Davern, Bob Wilber, Buddy DeFranco
(though I've never cared for his sound), Ken Peplowski, and, particularly
on bass clarinet, Ron Odrich. In the Chicago-Milwaukee area we have a
really fine swing clarinetist, Chuck Hedges. His most recent CD (I think)
is "Live at Andy's" on the Delmark label. Delmark has also recently
re-released the Barrett Deems album "Deemus," which features Chuck.
