When I was first learning to play I had a sports injury that damaged my
Right thumb in such a way that even now I don't have the strength that I
should in it. For a couple of years I had to play similarly to what you are
describing with my clarinet supported. I have however kept at it and do not
need to do this anymore except when I am playing for long periods of time
and my thumb gets tired. Maybe it is just a stage that will pass with time?
Who knows, but I do know that in some cases it may be necessary until
sufficient thumb support is gained.
