I can't help wondering why, if the composer is a friend, you couldn't ask
him for a set of parts or even a score from which you could input parts
directly to a notation program. What you're asking about seems to me to be
illegal without permission of the copyright holder. With permission there
are much more direct ways of getting at the music. If the music is
published, whether or not you know the composer personally, what you are
trying to do deprives people of income they may be entitled to (you said
this is recorded on a CD, which doesn't sound like a home-recorded tape of
an amateur performance).

Just a thought.
