According to several older orchestration texts, as well as some historical
surveys of the history of the clarinet, the bass clarinet in C did exist
briefly, but was obsolete by the end of the 19th century, perhaps as early
as the 1870s. I looked this up as a result of a previous thread about
bass clarinet transpositions, but at the moment I can't remember where I
found the citations. It should be easy to confirm this in any good music
library.
