I saw a young student use that assembly method once. Her teacher must have
read your booklet. It scared the heck out of me. Unless it is done with a
level of carefulness well beyond the normal junior-high student, it will
put UNBELIEVABLE stress on the middle tenon and socket. I'd much rather
see a little minor pad damage, or even key damage, than a shattered socket.

Incidentally, doesn't anyone else support the clarinet vertically with the
bell section on their knee while putting on the barrel joint and mouthpiece?
