I had the privelege to witness a rehearsal of Chicago Symphony with Boulez.
They were rehearsing Ravel Valse Noblet e Sentimental. In one of the last
waltzes the orchestra strings were muted and divisi with horns stopped of
muted in a thick impressionistic texture. At one point, he immediately
stopped the orchestra and spotted a wrong note in the third horn part! Talk
about an incredible ear!!
