Tami,

Your problem sounds a lot like what happens when one gets chronic tendonitis.
A chronic tension starts that is more related to the brain than an injury. I
had an injury from training on my bicycle that resulted in a tendonitis that
I would aggrevate in my sleep years later! I found the only way to deal with
it was to do relaxation exercises in order to learn when I was tensing the
offending muscles. You must learn to break every 10 minutes and do a stretch
followed by a period of relaxation. Perhaps the yoga pose "lion face"
(something like this, a face where you try to open everything - eyes, mouth,
nose as wide as you can and hold it for 30 seconds) would help.

The trick is you are using too much muscle for what you want to do, and you
should try to find how little muscle you can use. After you learn to feel
when you are tensing up, you will recognize it and learn to relax. What type
of mouthpiece are you using and what strength reed? Maybe to hard a setup?

This relaxation technique has also worked for carpal tunnel (sp?) syndrome
for three friends of mine as well - stretching fingers back and sideways etc.
followed by relaxation. Although I know the doctors on the list will
recommend surgery :-) (Hello David) My own belief is that this is a mental
state that can contribute to perpetrating a condition of tendonitis.

Subject: sore jaw

I am a senior performance major at a University in Iowa and I have been
having
a problem with my jaws and general embouchyre while playing and shortly
after
playing. My jaw hurts, feels really tight and shakes sometimes. I often
leak
air because my mouth seems to become too tired. Has any one else had thesse
problems or does any one have some advice for me?
