If there is a choice between the piccolo and the Eb clarinet, do away
with the piccolo! So often, as was pointed out, the piccolo and Eb
double, with disastrous results. I've spent the last few years playing
Eb about as much as I play Bb/A, and have won over several dyed in the
wool, Eb-hating band directors. Many times I will even play the Bb part
on the Eb, with no one the wiser. My setup is an R13 Eb, an Accubore
donut barrel and a Greg Smith m'piece, with #3-3 1/2 reeds. This
combination gives me a fairly dark sound that blends with the rest of
the clarinet choir, and decent intonation up to a high G# (or A, if I
must).

Long live the Efer!
