I like the Eb, and I think it really adds a nice sound to the clarinet
section. It is especially helpful on high parts where the high C on Eb
is equivilent to altissimo F for the 1st Bb Clarinet. Also, the parts
may double the flute and piccolo, but many times the instrument plays in
clarinet choir sections, and adds a distinctive flavor.

I am probably biased because I really love the instrument, and lobby
hard to get to play it, but I think that while there may not be so much
of a loss in its absence, the positive impacts are tremendous when it is
present.

Quote(s) of the Day:

"Inspiration may be a form of superconciousness,
or perhaps of subconciousness--I wouldn't know.
But I am sure it is the antithesis of
self-conciousness." -Aaron Copland

"Ineffective people live day after day with unused potential. They
experience synergy only in small, peripheral ways in their
lives. But creative experiences can be produced regularly,
consistently, almost daily in people's lives. It requires
enormous personal security and openness and
a spirit of adventure."
-Stephen R. Covey
