Well, it would seem appropriate to note why an Eb clarinet was ever put in
the band to begin with! At least....the more modern transcriptions of the
late 1800's and early 20th C. No...the Eb clarinet part is unecessary if
one knows why it was scored. Why do many current composers score for Eb
clarinet in the standard voicing? Because one has always been there! Why
write 3 cornet parts and 2 trumpet parts when they are all played on the
same instrument? Why? Becasue they have always been there! Did the
composer intend for them to be played on cornets and trumpets? Nope -
just wrote for the standard instrumentation.
