I remember talking to Marcellus once shortly after he had had a talk with Sol
Schoenbach. Schoenbach was principal bassoonist during the McLane era.
Marcellus was always a huge fan of McLane and was no doubt digging for
stories.

Apparently McLane used to make lots of mistakes in rehearsals and it drove
Tabuteau nuts. Tabuteau never hesitated to speak his mind to anyone in the
orchestra, including the string sections. I guess he was sort of an
"enforcer" in a manner that would not be tolerated now.

<<I am told that he made a practice of intimidating newcomers to
the orchestra. Shortly after Ralph McLane had arrived, he found himself
the repeated target of sneers and disapproving gestures from Tabuteau
whenever he finished playing exposed clarinet passages.>>
