I respectfully disagree with Susan on this issue. A student may produce a
beautiful sound on the bottom of the line Yamaha clarinet as well (given a
good setup on the top of the horn).......the Buffet enhances what the
student already learns early on. Beautiful sound producation should begin
at the moment a student begins playing. A Buffet is not necessary.

I encourage students to move to the top horn (Selmer, Leblanc, Yamaha, or
Buffet.....whatever!) when they feel a difference between my horn and
their's. Many feel a little difference after a couple of years of study,
but many do not. When the sound production has been firmly established
and all facets of blowing and embouchure development are beginning to
develop nicely, the student will notice problems with his setup and feel a
difference with the more advanced horn. That's the time I suggest they
begin looking.
