On the Tabuteau story, HatNYC62@-----.com, says (in part):

>Tabuteau was a cruel and
frightening person. Yes he was a great teacher and player, >but he had few
scruples in matters regarding his students.

I had heard the Tabuteau reed story before it appeared on Klarinet and tended
to believe it because of another story about the man and his character. I
can't vouch for the accuracy of this one either, but I have read about this
incident a number of times and think it is probably factual.

John DeLancie played 2nd oboe to Tabuteau in Philadelphia. While in Europe
he made a point of visiting Richard Strauss to suggest that he write an oboe
concerto. Strauss did, but when it was played in Philadelphia for the first
time, DeLancie did not get to do the US premier because Tabuteau insisted
that, as principle, he had the right to be soloist and did so!
