I once heard a story in which Tab., in order to "test" a new student,
assigned an impossible amount of work for the week (test what I'm not
sure). Well, about Friday or so, a courier shows up with a shoebox at
Mr.Tabuteau's front door. Inside, the student's oboe, chopped up into many
little pieces in overwrought frustration! Apparently Tabuteau was so
chagrined he arranged with Loree to get a replacement instrument.

Makes you wonder about these legendary teachers. Maybe they could teach,
but with the kind of attitudes being described, I like to think we've
moved onto a better age of music education. Like the stereotype of the
mean spinster piano teacher scaring the hell out of the neighbourhood's
children!
