Hi Everyone -

I play clarinet in the northwest suburbs of Chicago: principal clarinet in one of the
community orchestras and lots of musicals playing clarinet, sax and flute.

I've been reading what you have all been writing for a few weeks now. Usually
wonderfully interesting, and I've gotten some great ideas for solo literature.

I've got two questions - one clarinet related and one computer related.

First the on-topic question:

Does anyone have suggestions for working with a reed if it sounds great but is sharp or
flat? I guess that this is a relatively new revelation to me - that a reed itself can be out of
tune. Are there ways to work on it to, for instance, sharpen or flatten high notes, low
notes, or throat tones; or if any part of the clarinet, or the whole clarinet is significantly
out of tune from a particular reed, should you just give up on it?

Next question (not on topic but driving me nuts!)

What on earth do you do with encoded stuff? I have a Power Mac. I am pretty
self-sufficient on it and take pride in the face that I have pretty much learned it on my
own, but am clueless (my friends would end the sentence right there) on how to decode
these. I assume I need some software and also assume that I can download it, but past that
I am lost. Whatever help you can give me is greatly appreciated.

I enjoy reading what you all have to say!! TIA for your help

Nancy
