I find that rather arrogant on the part of the audition committee! Of
course a player should own an A clarinet to participate in a youth
orchestra (or at least be really good in transposing, until the purchase is
made). But to own one before making the group which would require it, to me
is putting the cart ahead of the horse. Ya make the group first, then, only
then, get the A Clarinet. All of my younger students make Youth Orchestra
first, and commit to an A Clarinet in the audition- IF they make it.

Regarding the earlier thread on the fairness of youth orchestras requiring
players to own A clarinets, I just found out that at our local youth
orch.auditions, if the student didn't have an A clarinet, then the
committee chose not to hear about half the material they all prepared,
ie.A clar.excerpts (Capriccio Espanol, Semiramide Ov.,Brahms 3). No
mistaking the A clarinet priority there!
