I had discussed this with Tahna privately, but what I said to her
was that the treatment of the indian in New Mexico had led to
a great deal of alcoholism, and that this was particularly visible
in Gallup (the pawn shop city). My negative reference is speaking
of NM is that, while most of the states have treated the indian
dreadfully, New Mexico appears to have made the least effort at
maintaining a viable independent life for them. Thus the
alcoholism, thus the sale of artistic treasures in pawn shops in
Gallup, etc., etc.
