Howarth of London (which advertises in The Clarinet magazine) apparently
has professional instruments of identical design in both wood and "plastic"
(ABS I think). Has anyone tried them?

Ah, there's the problem. Practically nobody makes good commercial plastic
(or other non-wood material) instruments.
Greenline is the only one I know of.
