I sincerely hope this is not true! At the very least, cosmetic matters are
involved. Finishes would be unlikely to match well, especially on
non-stained instruments. Furthermore, proper fit and playability would be
affected, I am sure. Mouthpiece and case added later is fine.

As to personal preference modifications, your point is well taken.
Assuming that you have established a certain preference through experience,
by all means have you local tech adjust your instrument as you desire.
