David,
I second the "Hillandale Waltzes" by Victor Babin, arranged by
Denny Nygren. It's a fantastic piece for clarinet and wind ensemble.
Another piece to look at is the Spohr, "Fantasy and Variations on a Theme
of Danzi". The band arrangement is very well done and doesn't overpower
the soloist. The Rossini, "Intro, Theme, and Variations" is fun and easy
to put together.
You might want to stay away from the Weber, "Fantasia and Rondo"
from the clarinet quintet. This band arrangement is very thick - let's
see, I better keep the trombones out of trouble (beer hall, poker game,
etc) so I'll just add them to THIS section". I think this would be a good
piece to do if you went through and thinned out the band accompaniment.
Also, the arranger, Jack Snavely, desided to cut and slash the original
musical line so if your performing this piece you would have to reconstruct
the score in order to bring it back to it's original form. AND a reduced
score!
