As a kid, just to keep practising from becoming a total bore (I hated
it!), I would transpose the etudes, and even solo pieces, up a step (or
down a 1/2 step) for variety. As a result my C or A transposition
abilities came rather naturally. Many Italian players even today utilize
full Boehm clarinets (with the Eb) and transpose everything.
Also the years spent playing polkas (oh! The "P" word again!!) helped,
because I often read off of accordian parts. The only trap I still fall
into is when I go back to a Bb or A part played on the proper
instrument. If I'm not careful, I'll continue to transpose! Embarassing,
right?
