Actually, the woodwind players in the Welk band did very well financially.
They also had to be quite adept at several woodwind instsruments, and adjust
to many different musical styles. They had a health benefits package
including medical, dental, etd, and a retirement package including an
annuity, union benefits, television and recording fees, etc. How many
clarinetists out there have jobs that provide that security? I am continually
amazed at the hundreds of clarinetists out there that are unemployed, can
play no other instruments, or even other instruments in the clarinet family,
and have no way to make a living. I am presently playing lead reeds with the
Theatre Under the Stars Orchestra in Houston, the largest regional theatre
orchestra in the Southwest, am a contracted member of the Houston Ballet
Orchestra, and look forward to playing with several ethnic groups in Houston.
I find musical challenges come from performing many types of music with other
FINE musicians. Chester753@-----.com
