I can relate to Gary Hopkins story about the sousaphone. My mother
started me on tenor saxophone when I was about 9 or 10. When I got to Jr
high, I joined the school orchestra. But I had a mile to walk to school
each day. Later, as a sophomore in high school, I played baritone sax
for dance band as well. I didn't have as far to walk, but it was even
worse carrrying it. In my junior year, I started learning clarinet. I
progressed rapidly and by my senior year, played 1st clarinet in the
school orchestra. By that time I had won a 4 year scholarship to
college, so I took most of my college savings and bought my Selmer
serios 10 G (that was in 1969). I was hooked. I sold my sax a long time
ago.

Last spring, my older daughter started middle school. She went in
wanting to play the flute. She tried out several mouthpieces, got a tone
out of the flute, a squeak out of the clarinet, but a nice clear tone
out of an oboe reed. Now she's learning oboe. Oh well.
