From: Mike Nichols <mrn8395@-----.edu> Subj: "Obscure" Stamitz Concerto Date: Fri, 29 Aug 1997 01:33:02 -0400
Hello. I am trying to locate a piece of music I taped off the radio
several years ago. The radio announcer said it was the "Concerto in Eb
Major by Karl Stamitz." Recently I visited H&H Music in Houston (the
largest music store in town) and asked if they had a copy. The man at
the music counter indeed handed me a piece of music called "Concerto in
Eb" by Karl Stamitz. When I opened the music, though, it was clear to me
that this was not the same piece of music. Obviously Karl must have
written another concerto or two in Eb. I understand he wrote several
concertos in all, but I haven't yet found another piece called "Concerto
in Eb." Maybe if I tell you what I know about this piece, someone can
pinpoint the opus number or concerto number.
The third movement of this concerto is in 6/8 time (like the other Eb
concerto, I found out). I think it is distinguishable, though, by the
fact that in the orchestral version, Stamitz writes in a series of horn
calls in that movement--in other words, he tries to recreate the sound of
hunting horns. I also know that it was recorded by Hans Urauf-Staueroff
(I hope I'm spelling that right--I'm going by the radio announcer's
pronunciation) with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra under the direction of
Helmut Millabruehl.
Also (and this is the really wierd part), I heard an overture from a
French opera the other day on the radio which has a melody almost exactly
like the third movement of this concerto (it's as if one of them stole
from the other--and they probably did). I wish I could tell you the name
of the opera composer or the name of the opera, but I was in the car and
didn't have anything to write it down with.
If anyone has any idea which concerto I'm talking about, I would really
appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Mike Nichols
