Subj: Why the clarinet?

After reading the many messages regarding the reasons for people choosing
the clarinet, I pondered for the reason that I chose the clarinet.
After thinking about it several days, I still cannot remember why I chose
the clarinet. I do remember though

1 Starting lessons in school in the fifth grade in 1936.
2 Hiding the horn in my dresser so my dad wouldnt find it. He
thought it was foolish.
3 Going downtown and buying my first personal clarinet in
September the day Hitler invaded Poland. (A Wunderlich)
4 Going overseas as an infantry replacement and wandering over to
a tent in Leyte where I heard musical sounds. I
auditioned
5 Being assigned to the 234th AGF Band in Manila.
6 Returning home and playing with the U of M Extension Orchestra.
7 Starting what is now called the Southfield Symphony Orchestra in
Detroit.
8 Retiring to Florida, now playing in the Suncoast Symphony
Orchestra, Pinellas Park Civic Orchestra and the South
Pasadena Band.
9 Being very frustrated at not being good enough to play in a
major orchestra.
10 Being glad of this as a friend of mine retired from a major
national orchestra after 40 years of it said he was
glad to quit and never play again.
11 Had I been in his shoes perhaps my best loved possessions would
not be a pair of Buffet clarinets.
12 Looking back on all this and realizing what a great impact the
clarinet had on my life----
13 Im glad that I did choose the clarinet for what ever reason.
