I do not understand this discussion. There has already been an authoritat=
ive
answer by a native german-speaking member of this distinguished list.
Although not beeing native german-speaking my german is good enough for
lecturing at german universities. I have never seen the german von spelt =
any
other way than von by germans. As of this very day it is not uncommon to =
be
of an old german family with von in the family-name, so in fact it is
possible to look it up in any german phone directory. My swedish-german
dictionary and grammar says the same.

van is in fact the dutch variant of the same thing. Both words mean in fa=
ct
from or of and there is a variety of european languages where noble famil=
ies
are carrying a corresponding word compare for instance the swedish af als=
o
spelt without a capitalized a.
