Hi. I've tried about 6 buffet R-13s and they all sounded and resonded very
differently! I'm happy with the R-13 that I ended up getting. Thanks for
your clarinet story Christie, I'm always curious as to how people got
started, I don't know why, I just think it makes a good story. Oh also, I
have a question or two if someone wouldn't mind answering them for me. A
friend of mine has a recording of Mozart's clarinet concerto played by a
basset horn. He said that Mozart wrote the concerto for a basset horn. My
questions are these (even though I should probably know this by now!): What
does a basset horn look like? I've never seen one, I've only heard one
once. Is a basset horn an earlier form of the modern clarinet? Also, I
once read somewhere that Mozart only wrote the 1st movement for basset
horn and then wrote the rest for clarinet, but I can't remember where I
read that and it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I would really
appreciate it if someone would fill me in. Thanks

Tahna

Tahna -
Hi. I love the Leblanc Concerto that I chose. It has a wonderful dark,
flexible tone. In comparing it to my Buffet - it was really pretty close
in most areas. Gosh - playing high notes is so easy on this clarinet.
However - I must tell you that I tried 2 Concertos and they were so
different from each other. The one that I didn't care for had a real loud,
brash sound. In playing the Concerto that I did choose - it was like it
was made for me. Everything just really fit.
Why did I decide to play clarinet? Let's see. I believe that primarily it
was because my older sister, and more importantly my older brother who I
idolized, both played clarinet. I followed him everywhere - I was his
"Clarinet" carrier. I carried it for him wherever we went. Then I would
go see him at college and listen to him play and then fell in love with the
clarinet. I began playing in 4th grade - but my mom had to teach me as
they didn't start at school until 6th grade.
