Most cork greases are made of parafin wax and petroleum jelly or something
similar to that. I've been making my own for a while now and have come up
with a recipe that works great. For around $3.00 - the price of two tubes of
commercially made cork grease - you can make a four year supply! It's
simple, all you need are two ingredients - vaseline and parafin wax
(purchased at any grocery store). Mix both in a pan with the burner set on
low heat. Experiment with the mixture to your liking - too much vaseline
makes the cork grease oily and can break down the contact cement used on the
cork. A two parts parafin to one part vaseline seems to work okay. Let the
mixture cool and there you have it, homemade cork grease! To tell you the
truth, I've never really measured exact amounts, I can feel the difference
(oily or flakey). Remember, the harder the grease, the better.
