This could be true.....I find that the sound is "heavier" with a thicker
blank.....something that really helps for projecting through the
orchestra...especially when there is no assistant on the part.

Mohler, one of Stubbins prize students, began using thicker blanks in the
'70s? I'm not sure....just know that the measurement 3.28 at the shoulder
was the minimum!!!

Glad to hear someone else feels the time is worth it on the hand made
reeds. I don't do them now (I could), instead.....I just pour lots of
money into Vandoren V-12's and suffer when they wear out sooner....but I
do like the sound of them.
