My first exposure to the clarinet was in 4th grade band back in the '50s. The
reeds I used had hugh chucks missing. I don't think the band director played
clarinet. It was not until later when I took some private lessons that the teacher
was shocked at my reeds. The private teacher plus switching from an old metal
clarinet to plastic one made a big difference.
I don't recall the teacher giving any instruction on working on reeds. There
is still no tradition for working on single reed instruments like there is for
the double reeds. Could this be the reason there are so many different, even
contradictory views?
