I can't verify this, but I recall reading that the alto sax player Benny Carter
simply put a reed that played on the mouthpiece and left it there until he needed a
new one.
I play tenor sax as well as clarinet. On both, a stronger strength reed will
mean more work for the player; but you need this when going into the extreme altissimo.
On the other hand, playing multiphonics on the tenor sax (or bass clarinet) requires
a much softer reed than for normal register playing.
