However, Roger, the keyboard is much more demanding on a younger kid's
mind. While it doesn't present the same difficulties that a clarinet
does as far as tounging (don't say anything about the spelling!!) or
breathing, playing seperate lines, treble and bass, is a big thing.
It's very hard for me, even as a teenager. I can play on thing or the
other really well, but I just can't put it together. Also, piano
involves reaching with fingers and arms and a lot of technical issues
that a younger kid wouldn't have as much of on clarinet. Of course, the
more technical things wouldn't be encountered for a while, but still
they could present problems after a beginner starts to get into to
tougher material.

Just a thought. I'm not going to reprise my opinion on the whole matter
of kids and when to start, but I will say that if you do start a kid
early, any instrument you start him on will cause him problems that
someone a little older might not encounter.
