In my experience, the material is much less important than the design.
Plastic can play just fine. I kind of like the Selmer Goldentone, although
I may be predjudiced since I learned on one initially. Plastic mouthpieces
are about as permanent in facing as hard rubber ones, but develop a wear
groove from the top teeth much faster. Use of a mouthpiece patch will
solve the problem.
