Well, this may date me, but when in high school , we used mellophones and
alto horns, as did a lot of bands way back then! They are usually pitched
in E flat (sometimes they had alternate slides to put them in F). These
were used to substitute for the lack of French horns. Most any trumpet
player could play one with only a few minutes of practice-other than the
pitch, they finger exactly like a trumpet. The mellophone looks similar
to a French horn, but right handed, not left; the alto horn look like a
small baritone.
