Back in the 50's when I was in HS marching band, they had not just
mellophones but marshmellophones, which were much lighter than mellophones,
though they did tend to swell up and turn golden brown on really hot sunny
days -- some kids got (literally) stuck playing them. Haven't seen or
heard of those for a long time now, though.

At our school the horn players use mellophones, which are a heck of a
lot easier to march.
