Hi all,
First of all I love the sound of a bass clarinet. But, I do know that when
there are only 3 players or less in a section, bass is out......just cover
1st 2nd or 3rd!!! I audition alot for the Marine bands, and I have to
audition clarinet players on clarinet (Bb soprano)!! You see, in military
bands as well as orchestras, the regular clarinet (Bb soprano, I'll call it
regular for now) is what is in demand. I've played bass and yes it can take
some time getting used to, especially if I haven't played it in quite some
time, but, I can. Now take someone who's been playing bass clarinet parts
since day 1 and put a clarinet part like (let's say)...............
Firebird, 1812, Pineapple Poll, or heaven forbid a march like Circus Bee,
The Crosley, or Entry of the Gladiators (these marches can go into the
stratosphere and fast too) .......NOT a pretty picture, not to mention,
sound. If you want to play bass fine! Nut, stay proficient on Bb Soprano
clarinet. There are not many jobs for just bass clarinet. Please, don't
think that every bass clarinet player is not proficient. I'm just saying
that it's generally what I see.

Carlos
(I hope I didn't step on anyone's toes, If I did, I'm sorry ....I apologize
now)
